Rapper Ja Rule was sentenced to two years in prison on Monday after pleading guilty to the illegal possession of a firearm.

The 34-year-old chose to plead guilty rather than go to trial, where he would have faced up to seven years in jail if found guilty.

And according to the Associated Press the rapper, real name Jeffrey Atkins, is likely to spend 16 months in prison followed by 18 months’ probation.

The charges are the result of a July 2007 incident where police found  semi automatic .40-calibre pistol in the back seat of Ja Rule’s luxury car.

The rapper, his manager and their driver were all arrested on the scene, as was fellow rapper Lil Wayne who had performed with Ja Rule earlier that night.

Despite his prison sentence, the singer is staying positive.

‘Minor setback for a major comeback,’ he Tweeted on Monday.

But to make matters worse, it looks like Ja Rule’s Twitter account was hacked early on Tuesday, one day after he was sentenced.

At about 11 am, suspicious messages began appearing on Rule’s account. seemed that the rapper regained control of his Twitter at one point, saying: ‘This coward @50cent hackin’ my page is some sucker s**t – that’s why you’ll never be half the man your mother was!’ But then the negative tweets returned.

The Twitter battle between Ja Rule and 50 Cent began on Monday when it looked like 50 Cent wasn’t too concerned with Ja Rule’s prison sentence.

When Ja Rule Tweeted: ‘Damn da homie Ja Rule gotta do two years. Tell him I said don’t worry I got him when he come home. Lol,’

50 Cent responded with: ‘Come on its only 721 days stop crying. Its only 104 weeks. Wipe ya nose sucka. Be a man! Lol.’
