Police arrested Forum for Democratic Change presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye following a disagreement over a route to use to his campaign venue in the Central Business District.
Police accused Besigye of disregarding a directive to use Mukwano road, which is considered to be less congested for his procession to the city center. He however insisted on using Jinja road, which runs through the city centre.
Kampala District Police Commander Aaron Baguma says a procession through Jinja road would disrupt business. The four-time presidential candidate was briefly held at Kampala’s Central Police Station before being taken to Kiira Road Police Station and then driven to his home in Kasangati.
His supporters began to swell at CPS before police dispersed them, firing teargas and also ordering traders along Kampala road and around Arua Park to close their shops.
Police was briefly engaged in running battles with a group youths who emerged from Kisekka market and vowed to ‘rescue’ their ‘president’.
However calm and normalcy was quickly restored. The rioters closed and barricaded off Kyaggwe road – lighting bonfires using used car tyres. Anti-riot Police backed with armored personnel carriers swung into action and fired teargas and used water cannons to disperse the rioters.
The rioters dispersed into the neighboring Mukwano and Kisekka Auto malls before they regrouped and started pelting police personnel with stones leading to running battles. A police officer sustained bruises on the head after he was hit by a stone.
Two rioters were picked up and bundled onto a waiting police pickup truck. A team of heavily armed Military police also rushed to deploy around the area to restore calm.
